The National Day of Bhutan is December 17 and the most significant national holiday celebrated. This date marks the coronation of Ugyen Wangchuck as the first king of Bhutan in 1907.
The National Day was celebrated for the first time on 17 December 1971, sixty-four years after King Ugyen Wangchuck was crowned.
For the 112 National Day in Thimphu, more than 20 thousand people celebrated with His Majesty the King, His Majesty the Fourth King, Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, Their Majesties The Queen Mothers and the Members of the Royal Family
The Highlight of the day was when His Majesty announced that they are expecting their second child in spring, 2020.
His Majesty also announced a year long training of National Service for all citizens 18 and older. The National Service “Gyalsuung” will be instituted from the year 2022.This will include Military training as well as programs in agriculture sciences, entrepreneurship, computers and coding, and health sciences.
