Black Necked Crane Festival

Plan now for November 11, 2021

Celebrated in the courtyard of Gangtey Goenpa, Phobjikha, the festival was organized to create awareness of the importance of the conservation of the endangered black neck cranes. The Black Neck Crane Festival started in 1998 and is an annual event coinciding with the birth anniversary of the Fourth King of Bhutan.

Legend has it, that the black neck cranes are the reincarnation of deities who are protectors of the valley. On arrival and departure the birds circle the Monastry three times which we believe represents the three sacred jewels of Buddhism.
